Mission
NULI advances Open Science to increase collaboration and strengthen scientific work and innovation in Iceland. NULI takes an active part whenever possible in making publicly funded research results and research data, findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
Contribution to Open Science
The National and University Library of Iceland supports Open Access and signed the Berlin declaration in 2012. NULI runs two repositories for Open Access research and theses and a web site to promote Open Access in Iceland. The National Librarian has worked with the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and other key stakeholders to implement an Open Science mandate in Iceland.
Goals and objectives
- To work towards the finalization of an Open Science policy for Iceland
- To open and run a CRIS system for Icelandic research and scientific output using the Pure software
- To increase Open Access to Icelandic scientific journals by providing a service using the Open Journal Systems software

Services
The National and University Library of Iceland (NULI) is the national library of Iceland and the library of the University of Iceland (UI). All Schools at UI are supported through the collections and the library offers varied services that support studies at UI and reasearch both at UI and in Iceland. The library ́s operations are guided by professionalism, ambition and collaboration aimed at implementing new ideas and projects as NULI continuously works towards improving the quality of its collections and services. The library offers good facilities for studies and research as well as easy access to library materials both electronic and print. The universities in Iceland and the National and University Library of Iceland jointly run two Open Access repositories: Opin visindi the institutional repository for Open Access research outputs and PhD dissertations and Skemman.is an institutional repository for graduate and undergraduate theses. The purpose of these repositories is to make research results conducted at Icelandic universities accessible without hindrance or charge. Deposits are also permanently preserved by NULI.
